Once you are all set to go and know what you want to say and practiced.  In the next few weeks, we will hone our techniques to get the most leverage out of the experience.

Firstly, you need to get your audience attention, so here are 5 ways to open your speech that will gain attention of your audience.

  1. Empathise with your audience’s pain

If you can in a single sentence encapsulate what issues your audience are here to resolve and either offer a solution, or space to find one, your audience will want to hear what you have to say.

  1. Create a scenario your audience can relate to.

Once a listener can picture themself in your scenario, then they are hooked.  You can create the scenario in many ways, for example talk about a shared experience, a common activity or a media story.

  1. Present a bold statement

If you present a surprising statistic, a recent event or a controversial opinion you will gain attention.  If you want to keep the audience on side, then ensure it is a statement that supports their opinion or state your aversion to it as you introduce it.

  1. Ask a question

A great way to open anytime you speak, is to ask a question. When someone asks you something you try to answer it, so this will engage your audience.  You can also combine this technique with the others.

  1. Run a poll

If you begin with something like, “hands up if…” then people will engage as they will try to determine if they need to raise their hand.

All these techniques help to gain your audience’s attention but are more effective if you deliver them with confident body language and a smile….The you will have truly beautiful beginnings.
